Ken Lanci, candidate for Cuyahoga County Executive, released statement today related to sales tax "extension" for City Center. He says "slow down" until new Cuyahoga County leadership can assess the plan.
Ken Lanci, Independent Candidate for Cuyahoga County Executive expressed concern about plans to extend the tax for the Medical Mart and Convention Center today:
“Let the new executive and county council make these decisions. The people demanded change in 2009, and this is a major decision that should be made by the government that the people trust, not the one they threw out.
The sales tax is bringing in more revenue than the original plan for the Medical Mart and Convention Center needs. Extending the sales tax five years takes $200 million more dollars out of the hands of the people and transfers it to the government. What impact will that have on our citizens and our economy? These types of questions need to be thoroughly answered before the new county government should act. It is appropriate to have plans ready, and an expedited process, but let the new executive and council decide this.
Commissioners said they needed $400 million for a Medical Mart and Convention Center. Now it is $425 million. With paying off the bonds and the potential for cost overruns, it could be $500 million or more. The existing tax brings in nearly $800 million over 20 years. These facts need to be assessed before any decisions can be made on this project. Let’s get some answers, then act responsibly.”
